8 Tools for Beginning Lost Wax Jewellery Making

8 Tools for Beginning Lost Wax Jewellery Making

  1. Jeweller's Saw

Use this to cut a ring from jewellers wax. You can put the jewellers saw blade into a standard saw frame. If you’re making a smaller ring you can also saw away large sections to save time on filing them down.

  1. Files, Big and Small

The files that you choose to use for your wax carving will be personal to you but its good to start by purchasing a set of needle files for finer details alongside a flat 8 inch file and half round 8 inch file for larger surfaces.

  1. Exacto Knife

This tool is great for shaving off or smoothing out sections in your ring design. You can also chisel or cut out smaller sections of wax.

  1. Wax Ring Reamer

Ring reamers will save you a lot of time when sizing rings as this will carve out wax from the the inside of the ring in record time.

  1. Callipers

Sometimes rings can be made more organically to turn out different each time but for more rigid and precise designs, Callipers aid in keeping your rings exact and proportional. This tool allows you to mark out where you would like each section of your design to go and also help you find the centre of the ring face and ring band.

  1. Cutting Mat

To avoid scratching any surfaces you may have and to allow you to create the wax rings of your dreams in nearly any location, a cutting mat is great for protecting surfaces.

  1. Lighters, Candles or Soldering Tools/Wax Pens

Half the fun of working with wax is the fact that you can melt and distort it in many different ways.

  • Soldering tools and wax pens - great for melting specific areas or dripping melted wax to build up a design and creating holes in your wax rings.
  • Lighters - useful for a quick bit of melting or smoothing out.
  • Candles - a great alternative to lighters and lessen your chance of burning those precious digits.

  1. Ring Sizer

Make sure that your wax creation is the right size from the get go by using ring sizing mandrel paired with finger gauges or an adjustable finger measuring tape.
