- Research
See what’s out there! Finding your style takes time, researching what you like and find interesting is a great place to start. Follow lost wax casting jewellers on social media, create mood boards or go through your local library’s archives. This will help guide your creative direction.
- Watch tutorials
The internet is your best resource when it comes to learning. Whilst there are great paid courses out there, it’s good to have a basic knowledge. Jewellery making and wax carving tutorials on youtube or social media are incredible resources where you can learn not only how to execute the fundamentals but gather tips and tricks from individual jewellers.
- Purchase some affordable tools
We have published a full list of tools we recommend when beginning your jewellery making journey. These can be purchased online and from jewellery supply wholesalers however, there are also a handful of jewellers looking to sell old supplies on bidding websites which can work out very cost effective.
- Practice carving simple shapes and ring styles
Get to know your new medium. As jewellers wax is not the priciest material, a good deal of experimentation is possible. Follow along to videos or make a batch of different ring shapes to become familiar with the process, from oval and circular signets to classic thin and thick ring bands. Try out all your new tools and find out which call to you the most.
- Experiment with melting wax and adding texture
There are always new designs and textures waiting to be uncovered so get creative and see which new ways you can find to manipulate jewellers wax. There are many objects that are overlooked when it comes to wax carving tools, dentistry tools for example. Try different methods of melting the wax and most importantly - make sure to do it in a way that brings you joy as you want this practice to remain sustainable and fun for years to come.
Come along to one of our workshops for a step by step demonstration on wax carving where you’ll craft your very own wax ring to be cast into solid sterling silver! We’d love to see what you create.
